Bedford has the best Victorian housing in the county. The villas along De Parys Avenue, Kimbolton Road and around Castle Road were roofed in Welsh slate with ornate ridges, and the terraces of Queens Park, Black Tom and Castle Road are slate too, now well past a century old and nail-sick. Re-slating and slate repairs are a bigger part of our Bedford work than anywhere else we cover, along with the chimney repointing and lead that go with them.
The suburbs are different again. Brickhill, Putnoe and Goldington were built from the 1950s to the 1970s with concrete interlocking tiles and a lot of hipped roofs, and the estates at Wixams, Shortstown and Great Denham are new-build with a mix of clay and concrete tiles that are only now starting to need attention.
