Hemel Hempstead was built as a new town from 1947, and the neighbourhoods that came out of that plan, Adeyfield, Bennetts End, Chaulden, Warners End, Gadebridge and later Grovehill and Woodhall Farm, are roofed in concrete interlocking tiles that have now been up for 50 to 75 years. Those roofs are reaching the end together, so re-roofing whole streets of the same house type is a real part of our Hemel work, and matching the neighbour's roof on a semi is the usual request.
The Old Town along the High Street is another world: Georgian and older brick with clay plain tiles and slate, steep pitches, valleys and chimneys, and Boxmoor and Apsley have Victorian slate terraces from the canal and paper-mill days. New-town flat roofs are everywhere too, on the garage courts and the single-storey extensions, and most of them were felt that has long since given up.
