The post-war estates in Stopsley, Leagrave, Houghton Regis, Brickhill and Putnoe were roofed in concrete interlocking tiles, which are now reaching the age where the surface goes and the nibs break.
We lay both. Clay plain tiles are small, double-lapped and suit pitches of 35 degrees and up, which is why they are on the steep dormers and terraces. Concrete interlocking tiles are large, single-lapped, quick to lay and work down to about 17 degrees, which makes them the economical choice for most re-roofs. Pantiles and slate-effect tiles cover the rest.
Whichever tile, the job under it is the same: strip, sound timbers, breathable membrane, battens set out to the tile's gauge, and lead at every junction.

Tiles have a fixing schedule from the manufacturer that says which ones must be nailed or clipped. We follow it. Roofs that shed tiles in the first storm usually did not.
Clay is the traditional choice, lasts longer and keeps its colour, but costs more and needs a steeper pitch. Concrete is cheaper, quicker and suits most post-war houses. On a terrace or a semi we normally advise matching what is already on the adjoining roof.

Yes, where it suits the roof. Dry ridge and hip systems are mechanically fixed and need no re-pointing. Mortar bedding is still right on some older clay roofs.
Interlocking tiles go down to about 17 degrees depending on the model. Below that we would talk about a flat roof system. Plain tiles need 35 degrees or more.
