GRP fibreglass roofs in Luton and Bedfordshire
GRP fibreglass roofs are laid wet as one seamless skin over a new deck, so there are no joins to fail and no laps for water to find. Reliable Roofers Ltd fits GRP on extensions, dormers, balconies and garages across Luton and Bedfordshire where the roof has rooflights to seal, awkward shapes or people walking on it.
GRP stands for glass reinforced polyester. The roof is built on a new OSB3 deck with pre-formed GRP edge trims, then a layer of resin and chopped strand glass mat is rolled on, followed by a coloured topcoat. Once cured it is one continuous, rigid, waterproof sheet bonded to the deck, with the trims forming the drips and the upstands formed in the same material.
That construction is why we recommend GRP for roofs with lanterns, rooflights, pipes and changes of direction, and for roofs used as balconies or terraces. It is also the system that copes best with foot traffic from window cleaners and gutter clearing.
What is included
- New OSB3 deck, or an inspection and preparation of a sound existing one
- Pre-formed GRP edge, drip and wall trims
- Resin and 450g or 600g glass mat laminate to the manufacturer's spec
- Topcoat in grey, or another colour to order, with a non-slip finish where wanted
- Upstands formed around rooflights, lanterns, pipes and walls
- Warm roof insulation build-ups to regulations
- Outlets and chutes into the guttering
- Repairs to existing GRP roofs: cracks, star crazing and failed trims
Signs you need this
- You are adding a roof lantern or rooflights
- The roof is used as a balcony or walked on regularly
- The shape has bays, pipes and corners that felt struggles to seal
- You want a roof with no seams at all
- The old felt has failed at every lap

How it works
Deck check
GRP needs a dry, sound, well-fixed deck. We replace what is not.
Trims and laminate
Edge trims fixed, then resin and glass mat laid in one continuous operation in dry weather.
Topcoat
Coloured topcoat applied once the laminate has cured.
Details and handover
Upstands, outlets and rooflights checked, then photographed for you.
GRP is weather dependent: it must go on dry and above about five degrees, so we plan it around the forecast and never lay it in the rain to hit a date.
GRP fibreglass roofs: your questions answered
How long does a GRP roof last?
GRP systems are typically guaranteed by the manufacturer for 20 to 25 years when installed to their specification, and many last longer. The workmanship guarantee for your job is set out in your quote.
Can GRP be laid over old felt?
No. It has to bond to a clean, dry deck. The old covering comes off and, if the boards are damp or soft, a new deck goes on.
Can I walk on a GRP roof?
Yes. It is the best of the three systems for foot traffic, and a non-slip topcoat can be applied where it is used as a terrace.
What colour is it?
Grey is standard. Other colours are available to order.
Is GRP more expensive than felt?
Yes, typically. It is priced per square metre above a felt roof of the same size, and the gap is smaller on complicated roofs where the felt needs a lot of detailing anyway.
