Houghton Regis was a village until the 1950s, when London overspill filled it with the Tithe Farm and Parkside estates. Those houses, and the ones built through the 1960s and 1970s, are roofed almost entirely in concrete interlocking tiles that are now 50 to 70 years old, and they fail the same way: the surface goes, the nibs break, the felt underneath crumbles. Re-roofing those estates is the core of our Houghton Regis work, along with the flat felt roofs on the garages that came with them.
The old village around the High Street, All Saints church and Bedford Square is different, with clay plain tiles and slate on older cottages and Victorian houses, and the chalk pits to the south of the town left some houses in exposed positions that take the weather off the Downs. Linmere, the new town being built to the north, is bringing thousands of new-build roofs that will need dry verges and flashings checking within a few years.
