Timber rafters and purlins exposed during a re-roof

Brown tile hipped roof re-roof

A hipped roof stripped to the purlins, membraned and battened from above, then finished in brown interlocking tiles with new hips and ridge.

JobFull re-roof
MaterialsBrown concrete interlocking tiles, dry hip and ridge
AreaLuton and Bedfordshire

Hipped roofs have more cut tiles and more junctions than gabled roofs, and the hips are where they fail: mortar falls out, hip irons rust and the hip tiles slide. This roof was stripped back to the timbers, which were sound, then membraned and battened, and the photograph from above the scaffold shows the battens set out across the hips ready for tiling.

The finished roof is brown interlocking tiles with the hips and ridge completed in a mechanically fixed system, so there is no mortar to fall out, and the chimney re-flashed in lead.
