Grey and slate-effect tile re-roofs

Three recent roofs finished in grey: a chalet bungalow re-roofed in grey interlocking tiles, a hipped bungalow in slate-effect tiles and a grey tiled roof being laid up to a chimney.

Grey has become the most requested colour for re-roofs on post-war houses, because it lifts a tired brick elevation and sits well with grey windows and doors. These photographs show a chalet bungalow re-covered in a large-format grey interlocking tile, with the dormer cheeks clad to match, a hipped bungalow finished in a slate-effect tile that gives the look of natural slate on a pitch that is too shallow for the real thing, and grey tiles being laid up to a chimney with the lead soakers going in course by course.

On all three the job underneath was the same: strip, timber check, breathable membrane, new battens, tiles fixed to the schedule, new lead, new ridge and hip.
