Slate roofs live or die at the chimney. The first two photographs show natural slate laid up to brick chimney stacks with new lead soakers under each slate course and stepped flashings let into the brickwork, which is the only way to keep a chimney dry for the long term. Mastic is not lead and does not last.

The pots in the third photograph have been re-set in new flaunching, the mortar cap that holds them and sheds water off the top of the stack, and the last shows a membraned and battened roof with two stacks ready for the slates, the lead going in as the courses rise.
